That feeling of deep understanding…

I wanted to write today about protected space somewhat abstractly today, about how there are those times in life when we can’t prove our knowledge, but we know nonetheless with absolute conviction. A sentence which is a lot more complex without the aid of an example, for instance you may not know exactly why, when driving, you had to take a sudden left turn down an unfamiliar route. But a couple of days later you the pieces to the puzzle are filled in and the significance of that particular street at that particular moment, is revealed.

Trust in yourself yes, but it’s those moments when you don’t even hesitate or doubt that is the object of my concern, and in a very odd and complex way this article itself is an example of what I am talking about. Coincidence exists, but it’s a lot rarer than you think. The coincidence here is that I write a blog, I am always looking for new things to write, usually because they are topical and humorous, if only to myself. But I have lots of idle thoughts like the one are now reading, and what’s more, most of them are more interesting than a theoretical musing about the zone that you occupy alone at mysterious moments.

Just that perfect age for luuuv.

Dear Nick,

I was wondering about relationships, more specifically what do you think is the perfect age to “settle down”? I think a lot of my friends “settle down” too early and mostly for the wrong reasons.

Cafe Buenta

CAFÉ BUENTA

The long stretch of road that takes you from Mordialloc to Frankston is known as the Nepean Hi-way. It seemed to go on forever before me, curve after curve, and bend upon bend. The colour through my windshield seemed drained and the usually vibrant oranges, reds, creams and whites of the houses now looked a bleak grey. I put it down to being 8:30am and adjusted the radio. –

Catching my eye, the rear view mirror captured the gloomy expression in my face. “How is this all my fault?” I angrily asked the car in front. –

The modern architecture I was passing contrasted vividly with the older more substantial houses surrounding it. The approach to Frankston is also marked by the Seaford Foreshore. Clearly a place of wonderment, with a bold sign stating:

“SEAFORD FORESHORE, 5 km OF NATURAL BUSHLAND – FOR OUR KIDS!”

You need to figuratively clean your mouth out.

Dear Nick,

I was in public recently and overheard a conversation which struck me as not only a poor expression of the english language but also a poor expression of communication generally. The quote which really confused me was “Then I had to literally clean the toilet”.

I was just wondering Nick, can one figuratively clean the toilet? Is it really necessary to add the literally to that sentence?

Graham Kennedy said to the crow… It was your call that BLANKED my career

Graham Kennedy said to the Crow, it was your call that <blanked> my career.

‘He is naughty, with all of the safe cosiness that the term implies’ (McKee, 2001, p.28).

‘[T]elevision has become essential to us; at certain moments in time – the bi-centaury in 1988, the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997, Millennium eve 1999 – it is irresistible in it’s capacity to address the national audience’ (Turner & Cunningham, 2000, p. 3).

For the Australian general public Graham Kennedy is seen to be the undisputed and unrivaled King of Television; a claim that is restated at the end of Mathew Saville’s The King: the Story of Graham Kennedy (2007)[i]. Spanning a three and a half decade career which included both film and television; Kennedy entertained five nights a week on various shows starting with In Melbourne Tonight, then Blankety Blanks and finishing with Graham Kennedy’s Coast to Coast[ii].

But what was it in particular that made ‘King Gra-Gra’ as Alan McKee calls him (2001, p. 18) the undisputed king? Did Kennedy, as King, really represent Australians or an Australian National Type or was he wholly unique – one of a kind? Throughout this essay I hope to demonstrate why Kennedy lives long in our memories as one of Australians greatest television presenters and most loved personalities, how he represented a national type and how he challenged an established set of values. After all ‘Australian Television programming remains one of the key means through which we can imagine ourselves belonging to a nation of common interests and experiences’ (Turner & Cunningham, 2000, p. 3).

Facebook, why bother me with yet another status update?

Dear Nick,

I have been feeling like facebook, is a wastedspace book recently, with the dribble of peoples empty minds spilling all over the pages that I diligently read. I guess I only have myself to blame I could just not read the infinite senseless status updates. However, given that you also fill the internet with mindless dribble expecting all of us individual ip addresses to read it, you would have an opinionon facebook.

Nick Nolte’s Blog?

Dear Nick,

Is this blog Nick Nolte’s blog? Because Nick Nolte’s Name is Nick and he is fairly arrogant, so it makes sense that he would answer every question he gets with the first line being, “Well Nick good question” or “Thanks for the question Nick”. I mean it doesn’t bother me either way if you are or you are not Nick Notle, but I think that you are Nick Nolte, Nick!
-FROM CRAIG
PS: the other clue is that most of your posts seem like that of a drunken mad man, which is also an attribute of Nick Nolte’s.

To Blog or not to Blog that is the question?

Dear Nick,
I am often confused about the nature of blogging, I enjoy reading the odd blog or two but find it strange that people would say what seems to be such personal things on the internet for anyone to read. So I guess my question is why do you blog?

Hi Nick and thanks for the question,
It’s a good question to, why do we blog? I blog because I was asked to blog, someone said that I would enjoy the odd blog every now and then, and that people would enjoy it when I blogged. I guess I don’t really mind a decent blog once in a while, and recently I have been blogging nearly every day.

Simon Says

The afternoon sun glazed over the wooden sign that hung above the entrance to the caravan park, ‘Toodleark Park’ or Toodles to those who lived there. Simon was eight years old and had dark blonde hair that at its current length covered both his eyes and ears. He walked slowly without shoes over the gravel road that led out of the caravan park and into the town. Simon lived with his mum, who also lived at the pub. He owned a pet fish and a ratty old teddy bear, his only toy.
