I wanted to write today about protected space somewhat abstractly today, about how there are those times in life when we can’t prove our knowledge, but we know nonetheless with absolute conviction. A sentence which is a lot more complex without the aid of an example, for instance you may not know exactly why, when driving, you had to take a sudden left turn down an unfamiliar route. But a couple of days later you the pieces to the puzzle are filled in and the significance of that particular street at that particular moment, is revealed.
Trust in yourself yes, but it’s those moments when you don’t even hesitate or doubt that is the object of my concern, and in a very odd and complex way this article itself is an example of what I am talking about. Coincidence exists, but it’s a lot rarer than you think. The coincidence here is that I write a blog, I am always looking for new things to write, usually because they are topical and humorous, if only to myself. But I have lots of idle thoughts like the one are now reading, and what’s more, most of them are more interesting than a theoretical musing about the zone that you occupy alone at mysterious moments.
However, life being the practice of the chaos theory, I start musing over this idea and low and behold the pieces of my own puzzle are filled in. I draw my inspiration from many sources, some of them popular such as the media, some of them cultural such as art, some of them local such as my own group of friends and some of them personal. It is the personal ones that I will have the most difficulty portraying, as you know yourself if you have ever tried to explain a vivid dream.
Like I said coincidence is a lot rarer than you think, and when two or three things are suddenly flagged for my attention, I find that it is a sign of things to come. This perhaps is not the greatest idle thought in the world and some may say that I am being inconsiderate of my readership. That may be so, and if it is I do apologise, but perhaps only to the fact that you are still reading. And it’s not an apology but a thankyou for continuing along the jilted mental path, laid out before you.
I guess that is the point though of idle thoughts. Holden Caulfield loved the tangents, and didn’t want to hear someone speak on a single linear topic. Perhaps Caulfield is the only person who would get this article, this example of writing. But that is the point, that space, that zone, that feeling. It isn’t isolation, it isn’t pain. It is the experience of fate briefly preparing a moment in your life. And that is what I have to leave you with, fate!
I could write essay after essay on fate, and what it is and when we experience it, and perhaps one day I will. However the act of this writing is an act of fate, and perhaps the act of you reading this is an act of fate. In a round about way this is your sign. Trust it and don’t add fantasy to it.
